Transitional Housing
Supporting whānau at risk of homelessness
Transitional Housing provides a safe and stable steppingstone for whānau on their journey toward long-term housing.
Our fully furnished whare offer short-term accommodation (12 weeks or more) to enable whānau to focus on building strong foundations - saving money, seeking employment, reconnecting with their whānau, and addressing personal challenges.
With dedicated Kaiarahi walking alongside them, whānau receive wrap-around support tailored to their aspirations, empowering them to transition into secure, sustainable homes to ensure their future is thriving.
The support we offer includes:

Short term housing
Whānau are provided with short term, fully furnished accommodation (usually around 12 weeks) to provide security while they work towards long term housing.
Dedicated assistance
Each whānau is matched with a dedicated Transitional Housing kaiarahi who walks alongside them, helping with tenancy obligations, goal setting and navigating systems.
This support is tailored to the unique needs and aspirations of each whānau.


Wrap-around support
Our wrap-around support includes:

help with employment pathways

support for daily living skills

assistance with enrolling with a GP or accessing other health services

obtaining identification and legal documents

budgeting and financial literacy, and
-
advocacy with the Ministry of Social Development and other Government agencies.
Preparation for long term housing
The ultimate goal is help whānau transition into a secure, sustainable whare.
If He Herenga Kura has no vacancies in any of the properties we manage, we can connect whānau with other trusted Transitional Housing providers

Eligibility criteria
There are all sorts of reasons whānau might need transitional housing support.
If you are experiencing difficulties in finding a stable place to live, or you are struggling to keep your current whare and you are on a low income, we may be able to help you.

How to make a referral
Referrals for Transitional Housing come from the Ministry of Social Development and Community Service Providers from across Te Whanganui ā Tara.
Whānau can also self-refer.
