About Us
At He Herenga Kura our foremost commitment is to address homelessness and ensure whānau have secure, safe, healthy and affordable homes. A home is more than bricks and mortar - it is a foundation for wellbeing, a place where whānau can belong, grow, and strengthen connections.
But housing is only the beginning Our kaimahi wrap every person and their whānau in a korowai manaaki - a living commitment of care, protection and opportunity. Through support work, navigation, and advocacy, we connect whānau to services, walk alongside them in times of need, and empower them to make decisions for themselves, exercising tino rangatiratanga.
With over 50 years' experience in Te Whanganui ā Tara, we work with whānau and hāpori to ignite self-determination and build flourishing futures for generations to come. Guided by Te Tiriti o Waitangi, we dismantle barriers such as bias and racism, and take action every day to live our values.
Our Values in Action
Whanaungatanga
Positive Connections
We build trusted relationships through regular visits, open kōrero and strong links to whānau and whakapapa.
Kotahitanga
Oneness
We work collaboratively with whānau, hāpu, iwi and partner agencies to find solutions together.
Manaakitanga
Generosity and Support
We respond with compassion, provide advocacy and act quickly when whānau need support.
Rangatiratanga
Self-determination
We give whānau the tools, knowledge and confidence to lead their own journey and shape their future.
Every action is guided by Āta Takepū - listening deeply, speaking with clarity, and acting with deliberate respect. Through collaboration with hapū, iwi, community partners and government, we not only provide homes but also create sustainable futures.
In doing so, we honour our name - He Herenga Kura, He Herenga Tangata, He Herenga Whenua - a sacred connection that unites our people and binds us to the land.
